The result depends on the type and porosity of the surface (stone, wood, etc.). However, in general, cellulose thinner combined with abrasion can deliver good results.
The abrasion will need to be more intensive on stone surfaces (e.g. using a wire brush) and should be adjusted accordingly for softer surfaces such as wood.
