To extend the lifespan of a bituminous roof, it is essential to carry out periodic maintenance at least once a year. This helps keep the roof in good condition and prevents major damage in the long term.
Periodic maintenance typically includes:
- Detecting and repairing local signs of ageing, such as blisters and cracks
- Applying a life-extending roof coating to enhance the roof’s protection
Blisters and cracks can easily be sealed with a patch of bituminous roofing membrane or repaired using a bituminous roof mastic, such as IKO pro Dakpasta.
IKO offers several roof coatings designed to extend the lifespan of bituminous roofing:
1. IKO Pro Dakonderhoud
- Service life extension: 3 years
- Features:
A bituminous roof coating ideal for prolonging the life of existing bituminous membranes. Since it’s bitumen-based, the treated surface can later be overlaid with a new bituminous membrane. At the end of its service life, the entire system can be dismantled and recycled together with the membrane.
2. IKO Pro Elastic Rubber
- Service life extension: 5 years
- Features:
A water-based bituminous coating enriched with latex, designed to extend the life of bitumen roofing. As with the previous product, the surface remains compatible with a future bitumen overlay.
3. IKO Pro Acryflex
Service life extension: 7 years
- Features:
A solvent-based acrylic coating that extends the life of the existing bituminous membrane by 7 years. However, since this product is not bitumen-based, the treated surface can no longer be overlaid with a new bituminous membrane later on.
